ANCHORSONG

Open Soundscapes Where Afro-Beat and Delicate Melodies Coexist

The latest release from Japanese artist ANCHORSONG, his first in five years, is "Ceremonial." His music, a fusion of traditional African rhythms and minimal music, creates a groove that has earned praise from none other than Gilles Peterson and Laurent Garnier. What is the musicality of this artist, whose reputation is growing through a kind of reverse import of acclaim?

The Vanguard of Organic Electronic Music

ANCHORSONG, also known as Masaaki Yoshida, is the first Japanese artist signed to the prestigious UK label "Tru Thoughts," which discovered artists like Bonobo and Quantic. He gained attention for his performance style, creating tracks in real-time using an MPC2500 and keyboard, and began his career in earnest in 2004.

After relocating his base of operations to London in 2007, his profile rose through collaborations with international acts such as Prefuse 73, Bonobo, Daedelus, and Jaga Jazzist, as well as Japanese artists like DJ Krush and Dedemouse. A unique point was his appearance at the US music festival "South by Southwest" in 2009 as one of the artists active in the UK scene.

He has released three EPs to date, and in 2011, he released his first full album, "Chapters." The following year, 2012, he made a triumphant return performance at "SonarSound Tokyo" alongside artists like The Cinematic Orchestra and Mount Kimbie.

His new album "Ceremonial," his first in five years, showcases his signature catchy, melodic phrases and beats. True to the theme of "electronic music adorned with organic grooves," the album's appeal lies in its expansive soundscape, uniquely ANCHORSONG's, woven from influences of Fela Kuti-style Afrobeat and his own distinct style.

To celebrate the release of this album, a special live performance featuring strings will be held on Thursday, January 28th, at Aoyama Moon Romantic in Tokyo.
