11 Artists Arrange Music Box Sounds Sent from a Star
The ALMA Telescope is the largest radio telescope ever built, a joint project of 21 countries and regions, including Japan. It has achieved remarkable results that overturn conventional understandings of the universe.
Last year, as part of ALMA Telescope's promotion, an art project titled “ALMA MUSIC BOX” was created through a collaboration between the National Astronomical Observatory and creators. This project transformed radio wave data, sent from the star R Coronae Borealis, which is nearing the end of its life and was captured by the ALMA Telescope, into music box discs using an algorithm. The result was 70 types of “dying star melodies” produced from 70 music box discs.
Based on these melodies, artists active both domestically and internationally, including Shuta Hasunuma, mito of Clammbon, Masayoshi Takagi, Goro Ito, Steve Jansen, and Christian Fennesz, approached the dying star's music box sounds with their own unique methods. This album, “Music for a Dying Star - ALMA MUSIC BOX x 11 ARTISTS,” features a total of 12 tracks.
Performance by Christian Fennesz, Featured on the Album, Also Announced
Christian Fennesz, an Austrian musician also known as Fennesz, who is participating in this album, will visit Japan. On September 29 (Tue.), he will perform at UNIT Daikanyama in a concert titled “Fennesz Concert Tokyo 2015.” Furthermore, on October 4 (Sun.), an event titled “ALMA MUSIC BOX: Melody of a Dying Star [TALK & LIVE] MUSIC FOR A DYING STAR” will be held at the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa. This event will feature live performances by Christian Fennesz and Shuta Hasunuma, as well as talks by Masayoshi Hiramatsu of the National Astronomical Observatory and others.
This is an unprecedented art project that expresses the grand scale of astronomical achievements through music. As the autumn nights grow longer, why not listen to this special album while gazing at the stars?
