MUSIC | The "Shibuya-kei Standard Project" Enters Its Third Year
Maki Nomiya Sings a Shibuya-kei All-Time Best Cover Album
An album evolving the "Shibuya-kei" sound, which once swept the 1990s and exerted influence from Japan to the world, is set for release. The vocals are by Maki Nomiya, the queen of Shibuya-kei and former vocalist of Pizzicato Five. The album, "What The World Needs Now Is Love ~Maki Nomiya Sings Shibuya-kei~," featuring 21st-century "Shibuya-kei standard numbers" curated by Bacharach researcher and music producer Osamu Sakaguchi, will be released on Wednesday, November 11th.

12 Pop Songs to Leave for Posterity, from Burt Bacharach to Kenji Ozawa
The live program "Maki Nomiya Sings Shibuya-kei" began at Billboard Live Tokyo and Osaka in 2013. As part of the "Shibuya-kei Standard Project" to broadcast Shibuya-kei sounds from Japan to the world, it features covers of Shibuya-kei hits and their roots, including songs by Burt Bacharach, Roger Nichols, Kunihiko Murai, Happy End, Yumi Matsutoya, Yasuyoshi Konishi, and Kenji Ozawa, presented as 21st-century standard numbers. It's a popular show within the Billboard Live program, with tickets often said to be difficult to obtain.
In 2014, a live album titled "Live Recording" was released, fully capturing the 2013 stage performances. And this November, a "studio recording" version, with all tracks newly recorded and featuring prominent Shibuya-kei artists from Japan and abroad as special guests, will be released as "What The World Needs Now Is Love ~Maki Nomiya Sings Shibuya-kei~."
The planned tracklist includes 12 songs, starting with Burt Bacharach's classic "WHAT THE WORLD NEEDS NOW IS LOVE," which also lends its title to the album, and extending to "Oh Honey" by The Scooters, a legendary band that disbanded after only two years of activity in the early 1980s. The album also features songs that have become landmarks of Japanese pop standards, such as Pizzicato Five's signature track "Tokyo wa Yoru no Shichiji," on which Nomiya herself performed, and Kenji Ozawa's "Bokura ga Tabi ni Deru Riyuu."
The first pressing limited edition includes a 21st-century "Shibuya-kei Visual Book" designed by art director Mitsuo Shindo. This 56-page visual book is packed with special photos newly shot by Shindo. Music writer Hitoshi Kurimoto serves as supervisor, and the book includes an in-depth commentary on Shibuya-kei standard numbers through a dialogue between Nomiya and Sakaguchi, exploring the historical context and musical nuances.
Maki Nomiya Sings Shibuya-kei - 2015 - at Billboard Live Osaka and Tokyo
This year again, "Maki Nomiya Sings Shibuya-kei" will be held at Billboard Live Osaka and Tokyo. Now an established autumn tradition, the theme for 2015, its third anniversary, is "French Shibuya-kei." With "Paris x Shibuya-kei x Maki Nomiya," Nomiya Nomiya will sing Shibuya-kei songs with an even greater elegance than in previous years. Her reinterpretations of Pizzicato Five numbers and numerous world-class songs that led to Shibuya-kei will be presented as 21st-century standard numbers.
