Nikikai 60th Anniversary Production: Don Giovanni – Opera in Two Acts
Mozart's Don Giovanni, one of his three great operas, opens with a dazzling cast, preceding its premiere at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein.
Based on the records of his servant Leporello, the eternal seducer Don Giovanni, who allegedly had affairs with 1003 women in Spain, will be performed by Kuroda Hiroshi and Masumitsu Miyamoto, both renowned for their interpretations of the role. In the 2004 Nikikai production, Miyamoto Amon's direction, influenced by the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks, created a sensation, with Don Giovanni appearing as an angel at the end. Kuroda and Miyamoto also shared the title role in that production.
This new production, directed by the acclaimed European director Karoline Gruber, portrays Don Giovanni as a figure transcending time and space.
Miyamoto explains, “Unlike other Mozart opera roles, I believe Don Giovanni is somewhat deified. There’s an existing vision of Don Juan. Like Sekinosuke in 'The Life of an Amorous Man,' there’s a story already known outside the opera, and if we believe Leporello, he’s a man who conquered 2,065 women. I was interested in playing a character who is already an icon.”
