The Final Best Picture Nominee at the Academy Awards, Finally Released in Theaters

This human drama, an exceptional success for an American film with an extremely small budget, has been hailed as a masterpiece of independent cinema, following in the footsteps of 'Frozen River' and 'Precious' by shedding light on ordinary people living in harsh circumstances. 'Winter's Bone' has been lauded with critical acclaim and ranked on numerous year-end best-of lists for 2010, and is now finally released.

Based on the novel of the same name by Missouri-based author Daniel Woodrell, the film tells the story of Ree Dolly, a girl living in a rural village in the state. Ree (Jennifer Lawrence) is a 17-year-old in the midst of adolescence, but she is fully occupied with caring for her younger siblings in place of their mentally ill mother and managing their day-to-day survival.

When their living expenses and food supplies dwindle, a more critical challenge arises. Her father, Jessup, a drug dealer who left home long ago, has been arrested by the police, and has used their home and land as collateral for bail before disappearing. Reluctantly, Ree sets out to find her father to protect her family, but her thuggish relatives and friends offer no cooperation, even resorting to blatant obstruction. With only a week left until the eviction deadline, Ree embarks on a life-threatening quest. What truth will she uncover at its end...?

The role of Ree Dolly is played by Jennifer Lawrence, born in 1990, who was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress. A rising star recently cast in the major blockbuster 'X-Men: First Class' (2011), her dedicated performance, which involved learning the regional accent and immersing herself in the environment, combined with her expressive power in conveying the subtle emotions of a young girl, powerfully signals the emergence of a next-generation star in American cinema.
