The Mexican Suitcase and the Truth of the Spanish Civil War

This documentary, "The Mexican Suitcase and the Truth of the Spanish Civil War," sheds light on the realities of the Spanish Civil War through photographs taken by legendary photojournalist Robert Capa and others, the existence of which only recently came to light. It will be released sequentially nationwide starting August 24 (Saturday) at Shinjuku Cinema Qualité and other theaters.

The director is Trisha Ziff, who "discovered" the Mexican Suitcase.

In 2007, 4,500 negatives of photographs taken by Robert Capa, David Seymour, and Capa's lover Gerda Taro during the Spanish Civil War, which were thought to be lost, were found in the home of a citizen who had fled to Mexico to escape the conflict. After 70 years, the box containing them came to be known to the world as the "Mexican Suitcase."

A documentary that unravels the untold truth of the Spanish Civil War through the extraordinary journey of the "Mexican Suitcase" and the precious images of the civil war broadcast to the world by three legendary photographers has arrived in Japan.

Trisha Ziff, the director, was one of the curators who "discovered" the "Mexican Suitcase." She draws parallels between the history of those who fled to Mexico from the right-wing rebels, also part of the fascist camp, and their struggle for identity, and Capa, Taro, and Seymour, who were themselves Jewish refugees.

Recording the lives of citizens desperately trying to survive

The Spanish Civil War, fought across Spain from 1936 to 1939, resulted in many casualties. Robert Capa, who became a star in the photography world overnight for his war photography during this conflict, worked alongside his colleagues and lover, Gerda Taro, and David Seymour.

And then, 70 years later, 4,500 negatives of photographs they took were discovered in Mexico. These images vividly documented not only the brutal and intense fighting but also the lives of citizens who, caught in the crossfire of the civil war, desperately fought to survive.

Numerous precious photographs, miraculously discovered, alongside testimonies from the few surviving Spanish refugees who had resettled in Mexico. This film reveals the truth of the Spanish Civil War, a subject historically taboo and suppressed in Spain, while also shedding light on the lesser-known aspects of Robert Capa, the world's most famous war photographer.
