Inmates, 'Currently Serving,' Take on the Roles

The Taviani brothers, Paolo and Vittorio, are renowned as world-class directors, having won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 1977 for 'Padre Padrone' and the Grand Prix du Jury in 1982 for 'The Night of the Shooting Stars.' Their latest work, 'Caesar Must Die,' marks a return to their roots with a documentary style, notably casting actual prisoners in its roles, setting it apart from their previous acclaimed films.

The film garnered critical acclaim at the Berlin Film Festival, winning the Golden Bear and the Ecumenical Jury Prize. Upon its release in Italy last February, shortly after the festival, it swept the David di Donatello Awards, Italy's equivalent of the Oscars, winning five major awards including Best Film, Best Director, Best Producer, Best Editing, and Best Sound. Now, this masterpiece, widely recognized as a defining film of 2012, makes its highly anticipated Japanese debut.

Prisoners Embody Their Roles as the Prison Transforms into Ancient Rome

Inside Rebibbia Prison, on the outskirts of Rome, Italy, inmates annually stage theatrical performances for the public. This year's production is Shakespeare's 'Julius Caesar.' Auditions are held for the roles, and Brutus, Caesar, and Cassius are cast one by one. As rehearsals begin in various locations within the prison, the inmates gradually immerse themselves in their characters, and the prison itself begins to transform into the Roman Empire.
