The Ideal Birth: Candidly depicting the true feelings and struggles of women before and after childbirth

The Ideal Birth, a film adaptation of the bestselling autobiographical novel by French author Elodie Abecassis, is now showing nationwide in Japan, starting December 22 (Saturday) at Shinjuku Cinema Qualite and other theaters.

Text by YANAKA Tomomi

Star Louise Bourgoin delivers a realistic and passionate performance, capturing the protagonist's psychological shifts

Pregnancy, childbirth, and childcare are often spoken of in bright, positive terms. However, the reality is that many women struggle to adapt to a child-centric life, experience hormonal imbalances, and develop unspoken conflicts. The film The Ideal Birth candidly portrays the true feelings and struggles of women during this period.

The original novel is by Elodie Abecassis, the author of the bestselling "Qumran" mystery series, which was also a hit in Japan. The film adaptation was a passion project for emerging director Remi Bezançon, who was inspired by Abecassis's own experiences.

The lead role is played by Louise Bourgoin, a cool beauty who was prominently cast in Luc Besson's epic adventure "The Extraordinary Adventures of Adèle Blanc-Sec" (2010). Bourgoin, who also underwent special effects makeup to portray the heroine Barbara's physical transformation, delivers a realistic performance of her psychological journey. Her co-star is Pio Marmaï, a talented young actor appearing in his second Bezançon film. Marmaï charmingly portrays Nicolas, who evolves from an otaku obsessed with movies and games to a supportive father.

Barbara, pushed to her mental and physical limits in pursuit of the perfect mother

"I'm pregnant with the child of the person I love!" Barbara is overjoyed and fascinated by the first changes in her body. However, the new life she eagerly embraced, based on the assumption that pregnancy awakens maternal instincts and childbirth leads to joyful days with the baby, becomes a series of bewildering experiences.

The Ideal Birth 04

While Barbara experiences emotional and physical anxiety due to hormonal shifts, her partner Nicolas remains laid-back and goes at his own pace. After the birth, the overwhelming responsibility of caring for a constantly crying baby falls on Barbara, pushing her to the brink. Yet, she strives to be the perfect mother and immerses herself in childcare. Gradually, differences in their parenting philosophies strain their relationship, leading to growing tension..

This is the world's first maternity film, realistically depicting the experience from a woman's perspective. Those who have given birth will likely nod in recognition, exclaiming, "That's so true!" while those who are yet to experience it will discover surprising truths.
