Japan Visit and Press Conference to Mark the Release

The Iron Lady, a highly anticipated film, features Meryl Streep's captivating performance as former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, earning her an Academy Award for Best Actress. This marks the second collaboration between Streep and director Phyllida Lloyd, known for Mamma Mia!, and tells the story of a charismatic heroine's downfall.

At the stage greeting, Streep expressed her delight, saying, "I thought I wouldn't be moved at this age, but my mind went blank and I was so excited!" She also offered words of encouragement to Japan, stating, "It's been one year since March 11th. I want to convey that there is always a future and hope."

At the press conference, where a traditional sake barrel-breaking ceremony was held, she charmed attendees by playfully dipping her fingers into the barrel to taste the sake. "Thatcher was a woman who was both loved and hated. I didn't know her life after she grew old, so it was difficult to reconcile those two aspects," she said. "I approached the role with accuracy and truthfulness to portray a real person. I wanted the audience to be able to connect with her life."

The True Face of the "Iron Lady" Portrayed by Meryl Streep

Born the daughter of a grocer, Margaret Roberts (Meryl Streep) was greatly influenced by her father, who served as mayor. After graduating from university, she aspired to a political career but lost her first election. While feeling dejected, she received a marriage proposal from the kind-hearted Denis Thatcher (Jim Broadbent). Although they had twins, Margaret remained dedicated to her political ambitions and was eventually elected to the House of Commons. Appointed Secretary of State for Education and Science, she decided to run for Conservative Party leader after her cabinet lost a general election. She meticulously researched her appearance and speaking style, ultimately winning the leadership.

As Prime Minister, Margaret faced significant challenges, including high unemployment, economic recession, and terrorism from the IRA (Irish Republican Army). During this turbulent period, Argentina invaded the Falkland Islands. Overriding the caution of her advisors, Margaret swiftly dispatched British forces, achieving a decisive victory and rebuilding the economy. Hailed as a charismatic leader, she faced public backlash over the introduction of the "Community Charge," leading to the departure of her close aides. The "Iron Lady" eventually recognized it was time to step down.

Now, in her old age and suffering from dementia, Margaret reflects on her past glories and setbacks, asking her husband, who appears in her visions, "Were you happy?"──.

This is not merely a biography of a former Prime Minister, but a story that delves into the lesser-known solitude and struggles of a woman who was also a wife and mother. We are invited to witness the true essence of the "Iron Lady," a role only Meryl Streep could embody so fully.
