Introducing Shibuya's Current Culture: The "SHIBUYA CULTURAL LIBRARY" Project | LOUNGE

LOUNGE | SHIBUYA CULTURAL LIBRARY

Implemented as part of the "YOU MAKE SHIBUYA Crowdfunding" to support Shibuya's culture

Tokyo's Shibuya district, which suffered significant economic damage due to the pandemic, has seen the launch of the "YOU MAKE SHIBUYA Crowdfunding" project to support its recovery. As a return for this initiative, "SHIBUYA CULTURAL LIBRARY," a series of live and talk sessions introducing Shibuya's current culture, is being held. The crowdfunding period runs until Sunday, September 6, 2020.

Live performances featuring collaborations between acclaimed artists

The "YOU MAKE SHIBUYA Crowdfunding" project aims to sustain Shibuya's culture and support its fashion, food, and beauty industries in preparation for a world with and beyond COVID-19.
During the state of emergency under the pandemic, media outlets repeatedly showed images of a deserted Shibuya Scramble Crossing. The city, which became a symbol of social distancing and self-restraint, suffered immense economic damage.
To support Shibuya in this challenging time, a special无观众 (no-audience) live stream will be broadcast from SUPER DOMMUNE, located in Shibuya PARCO and tuned by au 5G, as a return for the "YOU MAKE SHIBUYA Crowdfunding."
The lineup features GEZAN & yahyel on Tuesday, September 29; NITRO MICROPHONE UNDERGROUND & Yayoi Daimon feat. Girls Power (tentative) on Friday, October 2; and SIRUP & toe on Saturday, October 3. Each pair will perform in a collaborative format.

Talk sessions to explore Shibuya's cultural history also to be held

Shibuya has long been a pioneer in cultivating youth culture and fostering innovation for the world, serving as a leading hub for cultural expression in Japan.
Why has Shibuya become a breeding ground for cultures like fashion and music? Talk sessions will also be held to delve into Shibuya's history and cultural evolution.
Kenji Ishii, a professor at Kokugakuin University, has researched the urban formation and realities of Shibuya, a field he terms "Shibuya-gaku" (Shibuya Studies).

If we consider a city as an accumulation of constantly reorganizing space and time, then the megalopolis of Shibuya can be seen as a symbol of civilization and culture that reflects Japan's reality.
Similar to "Shibuya-gaku," music producer Kenichi Makimura, Jouji Fujii, and music journalist Natsunori Shiba's "Shibuya Music Encyclopedia" focuses on the narrative of slopes. Their research explores why Shibuya, a city of "slopes, rivers, and valleys," became a hub for a major trend in Japanese urban music, unraveling the strong "magnetic field" this area possesses.
In "SHIBUYA CULTURAL LIBRARY," alongside the live performances, three talk sessions will be held on the theme of "Shibuya and Music in Progress."
This program, which previously aired on DOMMUNE to great acclaim, will see the return of these three figures to SUPER DOMMUNE, now relocated to the 9th floor of Shibuya PARCO. They will engage in an in-depth discussion about Shibuya's music scene. Artists and music are drawn to Shibuya's powerful "magnetic field," as is its fashion...
Unveiling anew the culture and history born from this phenomenon.
