Nikikai, Tokyo presents 'Salome,' a co-production with Hamburg State Opera, at the Tokyo Bunka Kaikan on June 5 (Wed), 6 (Thu), 8 (Sat), and 9 (Sun), 2019.

Nikikai, Tokyo Presents the Opera 'Salome'
'Salome' by R. Strauss is an opera adaptation of Oscar Wilde's play.
The story begins at a royal banquet. Disgusted by the lecherous gaze of her stepfather, King Herod, Salome leaves the feast. She then hears the voice of Jochanaan, a prophet imprisoned by Herod, from the bottom of a well. Captivated by his voice, Salome orders the captain of the guard to open the well's cover. Jochanaan emerges and, unmoved by Salome's advances, continues to condemn the incestuous marriage of Herod and Queen Herodias.
Herod, who has been pursuing Salome, persistently requests a dance from her. Responding to Herod's vow to grant her "whatever she may ask," Salome sensuously sheds her seven veils, one by one, as she dances. After the dance, Herod asks Salome what she desires, and she replies, "The head of Jochanaan on a silver platter."
As a result of being rejected by the prophet Jochanaan, Salome demands his head.
Depicted as a demonic girl with perverse desires born of her purity, the drama unfolds with unprecedented madness, colored by Strauss's vibrant music.
This production of 'Salome' is a co-production with the Hamburg State Opera, one of Germany's leading opera houses. The direction is by Willy Decker, who commands fervent support and immense respect for his work on the world's operatic stages, including the Salzburg Festival and the Metropolitan Opera. The conductor is Sebastian Weigle, who graces the podiums of leading opera houses worldwide and reigns as the General Music Director of the Oper Frankfurt. The cast features a double bill of world-renowned soprano Mariya Taniguchi, active in Europe since her Metropolitan Opera debut, and Naomi Tasaki, known for her overwhelming scale and beautiful voice.
