What are the Highlights of "Electraglide 2012" According to Masashi Shirakawa of BEATINK?

Launched in 2000 as one of Japan's largest indoor dance music festivals, "Electraglide" created a sensation in the Japanese music scene. It was the first time that Makuhari Messe, now a familiar venue for large-scale events and festivals, was used as a stage for an all-night event. Over the years, it has featured renowned artists such as Underworld, Fatboy Slim, Kraftwerk, The Prodigy, Aphex Twin, LFO, Squarepusher, and Orbital. With its diverse venue design, decorations, food, and drinks, as well as elaborate stage production, it garnered broad and fervent support, primarily from dance music listeners, attracting over 140,000 attendees in six years. Now, for the first time in three years since 2009, the festival will be held on November 23rd (Friday, holiday) at Makuhari Messe and November 24th (Saturday) at Osaka ATC Hall, with an impressive lineup and original spatial design.

The Tokyo performance spans two halls, befitting its status as one of Japan's largest indoor dance festivals. HALL 9 will feature artists offering grand productions, including Amon Tobin's spectacular projection mapping, which will be shown in Japan for the first time, and Squarepusher's massive LED audio-visual set. Meanwhile, HALL 11 will host a diverse lineup of unique performers such as Denki Groove, Orbital, Four Tet, and Masayoshi Takagi.

The entire venue's curation is handled by Daito Manabe, a young prodigy in media art and interactive design who has garnered global attention for his work on projects such as Perfume and Etsuko Yakushimaru. His large-scale installation, utilizing the entire venue, is expected to provide immense enjoyment for attendees wandering the grounds throughout the night.

Don't miss the special festival-exclusive content either. From perennial favorites like a CD shop where you can instantly purchase music from artists you discovered live, a record market featuring specialty stores, a unique food area, and an official bar stretching an impressive 60 meters, to booths from popular Tokyo clubs and a cool SMOKING BAR produced by "SevenStars [SNAP BOX]".

Electraglide, with its lineup of headliner-level artists, promises to be an event that stimulates all five senses, not only through the diverse talent of its performers but also through its abundance of other captivating content.

"Beat Maestro" Amon Tobin Makes His First Visit to Japan

Amon Tobin, a beatmaker from Brazil who has had a significant impact on the global electronic music scene, is making his first visit to Japan for "Electraglide 2012" on November 23rd (Friday, holiday) at Makuhari Messe. Known as the "Beat Maestro," his performance is not to be missed, as it will feature projection mapping – a technique that has stunned the world by seamlessly integrating powerful visuals with music.

Projection Mapping: An Experience of Overwhelming Scale

Amon Tobin, affiliated with the esteemed British label "NINJA TUNE," has also been expanding his reach into film scores and contemporary music in recent years. His latest album, "ISAM," released last year, was created using field recordings to capture and manipulate sounds from nature, constructing new rhythms and beats. It was so impressive that Ryuichi Sakamoto described it as being "like watching a 3D science fiction movie."

Based on the concept of "ISAM," his live performance, "ISAM Live," utilizes projection mapping – a technique hailed as the "ultimate audio-visual performance." Unlike his previous DJ-centric sets, this show features a grand live performance, sound, and visuals.

Projection mapping allows for images to be projected onto surfaces such as building facades and interiors. Amon Tobin achieves an overwhelmingly scaled live performance by projecting intricate visual imagery – abstract, mystical, and explosively dynamic – alongside the sounds of "ISAM," immersing the audience in a storm of visuals.

For his live shows, he uses a 3D rig composed of cubes measuring 25x8x4 inches, capable of transforming the visual forms in multiple dimensions. He positions himself within this setup, enveloping the audience in the narrative world of "ISAM."

Amon Tobin's appearance at Electraglide 2012 is a major highlight. Experience a performance that transcends previous live shows, where visuals and music intertwine to create something truly unique, captivating audiences worldwide.
