Yukihiro Takahashi x Keigo Oyamada Interview (Part 1)

The music festival "World Happiness," curated by musician Yukihiro Takahashi, began in 2008. This year, it will be held on Sunday, August 23rd, at Yumenoshima Park Stadium in Tokyo, featuring a lineup of both new and established artists. We present an interview with Keigo Oyamada, who will perform as part of "METAFIVE," and Yukihiro Takahashi.

On the Nature of Music Festivals

Lately, I've noticed that festivals featuring international artists are seeing declining attendance, and the overall impression of music festivals seems to be changing. What are your thoughts on this?

TakahashiPerhaps audiences have simply become more accustomed to festivals. It also signifies that Japanese music festivals have become more established. At Fuji Rock Festival, for example, with its multiple stages, audiences gather at each stage without any particular bias, and they move with a plan, having decided which artists they want to see. They also enjoy the outdoor aspect of the event, utilizing the campsites. This way of enjoying festivals has become quite common.

However, on the other hand, I wonder if festivals are becoming oversaturated. Although World Happiness came later, in the eight years since we started, the number of large-scale festivals across the country has significantly increased. World Happiness has traditionally been held on a Sunday in early August, but this is the first year we've shifted it to later in the month. One reason for this was that other festivals are concentrated in the earlier part of the month. Another consideration was the weather.

OyamadaIt rained last year, didn't it? But it stopped when you were performing, Takahashi-san (laughs). It was quite heavy when other artists were on stage.

Also, performing in the heat can be exhausting. Equipment also suffers; the computers stopped working during Keiichi Suzuki's "No Lie-Sense" performance.

TakahashiWell, it was so drenched it was like taking a shower (laughs). It was the first time we'd experienced such rain and wind. But even then, PUFFY started right off the bat, getting soaked and hyping up the audience. That really gets you going. They played all hit songs, running around in the pouring rain. The members of Magokoro Brothers even said, "PUFFY's got it easy." Accidents can also be a source of excitement, creating a sense of unity throughout the venue.

World Happiness Hospitality

World Happiness is known for its minimal stage changes and comfortable atmosphere.

TakahashiThat's right. There are no changeovers; we alternate between the center stage and the left stage. When you have this many bands performing in a short amount of time, that setup works well. I think it's amazing what you get for this price.

Oyamada-san, how does World Happiness compare to overseas festivals in terms of its unique characteristics?

OyamadaThe hospitality is completely different. They even have a childcare service, which is very well-equipped.

TakahashiAn international artist who performs at Fuji Rock Festival told me they much prefer this one. They really said that.

OyamadaAlso, from a performer's perspective, the food is delicious (laughs). I'd say the catering is probably the best in the world.

TakahashiWe arrange it so that performers can interact while eating. People meet for the first time here, and then later they might jam together, or it could lead to recordings or live performances. From the organizers' perspective, it's rewarding to feel that this is a good place for such connections.

So, the artists also feel a closer connection?

TakahashiIn that sense, we want people to feel comfortable. We're confident in that aspect, even compared to other domestic festivals. After all, the performers' motivation is important.

You've been in charge of curation for World Happiness every year. Are there any specific criteria for selecting new musicians?

WORLD HAPPINESS 2015 | Yukihiro Takahashi x Keigo Oyamada Interview

TakahashiI don't really have any set criteria. I choose artists I find interesting at the time, or based on recommendations from staff, and we discuss it. However, sometimes, promising young artists become so in-demand after performing at World Happiness that they're no longer available for the following year. While that's a happy problem to have, it does happen.

Oyamada-san, among this year's lineup, are there any artists you're particularly looking forward to?

OyamadaKinukushojo-tai, perhaps. It's rare to get a chance to see them.

TakahashiI'm really looking forward to it too. I wonder how loud they'll play.

The visual design for the event always garners attention. This year, it's by fashion designer Yohji Yamamoto.

TakahashiYes. Yohji-san also created hand-drawn illustrations for us.

OyamadaIs this someone's dog?

TakahashiYes. It's Yohji-san's dog, Rin-chan. She's incredibly cute. This visual will be displayed on the stage backdrop. We'll also use it on the leisure sheets distributed to all attendees. Every year, some people just want the sheets. I think this year's design turned out really cool. It's almost too nice to use as a seat cushion (laughs).

Is World Happiness an event intended to appeal to a global audience?

TakahashiWe don't really have a strong focus on appealing to a global audience. I don't think it's necessary to invite international artists at this point. That might not be World Happiness's role. Primarily, we intend to feature Japanese artists, and there are still many Japanese artists we'd like to invite.

Headliner: METAFIVE

Like last year, you'll both be performing as "METAFIVE." Are there any new approaches this year?

TakahashiAh, previously it was "Yukihiro Takahashi & METAFIVE," but the "Yukihiro Takahashi &" has been removed, and it's now just "METAFIVE." We are a six-member group called METAFIVE.

OyamadaWe started in January of last year, so this is our second year. Our activities so far have included live performances recreating songs from "Yellow Magic Orchestra" and Takahashi-san's 80s tracks, as well as producing original music.

WORLD HAPPINESS 2015 | Yukihiro Takahashi x Keigo Oyamada Interview

Actually, we often get together for other songs or live performances around the META"THREE" mark, but (laughs). This will be our first live performance since last November, and the playing was so good then, I'm really looking forward to it.

From the live performance "Techno Recital" held in January 2014 at the time of formation. The members of METAFIVE are Yukihiro Takahashi, Keigo Oyamada, Yoshinori Ohsumi, Towa Tei, Tomohiko Gondo, and LEO今井. In July 2014, they released the live album "TECHNO RECITAL." In the same year, they produced the ending theme "Split Spirit" for the film "Ghost in the Shell: Arise border: 4 Ghost Stands Alone."

What is the significance of the three stripes on your costumes?

TakahashiThis is inspired by rescue workers. Overseas, rescue personnel often have three yellow stripes, don't they? It's not inspired by "Hachi-mitsubachi" (laughs). Still, the fact that this group of members is still doing this band is almost a miracle.

It's also a miracle that all the members have gathered at the timing of World Happiness this year.

WORLD HAPPINESS 2015 | Yukihiro Takahashi x Keigo Oyamada Interview

OyamadaI'm focusing entirely on METAFIVE now. For my solo activities, I was working on an album, but it's a collection of songs I've collaborated on over the past few years, so it's different from the process of recording. Even so, Takahashi-san was incredibly busy.

TakahashiFinally, things have settled down a bit. We still need to prepare for the live performance.

OyamadaIt's really just starting now (laughs).

TakahashiExactly (laughs). It's really just beginning. We decide on the direction as a group. We want to deliver a performance that's different from last time, where each member expresses themselves.

People often ask me how I manage to keep this group together. I don't manage them (laughs). Everyone does their own thing. Within that, they each have a clear role and express their individuality.

WORLD HAPPINESS 2015 | Yukihiro Takahashi x Keigo Oyamada Interview

Could you tell us again about the highlights of this year's World Happiness?

TakahashiWe have a collection of artists, each with their own unique personality. TRICERATOPS is a band we've wanted to have perform for a long time. People often say Clammbon seems like they'd fit, but this is their first time. For LOVE PSYCHEDELICO, I'll be playing the drums. Not as a guest, but for the full set. I'm really looking forward to that.

WORLD HAPPINESS 2015 | Yukihiro Takahashi x Keigo Oyamada Interview

OyamadaIt's nice when the weather is good. Since the date is slightly later than last year, I think we'll be able to perform in more comfortable temperatures.

TakahashiYes, from a fisherman's perspective (note: fishing has been Takahashi-san's hobby for 40 years), it looks like it will be sunny. I think everyone will enjoy it under perfect weather conditions.
