Delicious Cafe "toile de liberté" Behind Yutenji

Look for the "Behind Yutenji" intersectionThe cafe and shop "toile de liberté" (meaning "free canvas" in French), owned by Eiji Kasahara, who has worked on interiors and displays for Cher, BEAUTRIUM, dazzling, and ricori, and as an interior planner for private residences, is now fully operational. Located in a quiet residential area about a 15-minute walk from Yutenji Station, it serves delicious breakfast and pancake plates from 10 AM.

Menu: "Morning" until evening, "Dinner" on Thursdays & Fridays, "Weekend" on Saturdays

The shop's name, "toile de liberté," is a coined term from French meaning "free canvas." Named by owner Kasahara, the first-floor cafe features antique furniture, carefully arranged and coordinated by Kasahara, creating an immediate sense of comfort upon entering.

The plan was to renovate the old house, which had been a tatami shop since before the war, into Kasahara's atelier. However, Kasahara met Ayako Ito, a tea advisor who also hosts cooking classes, and they hit it off. The cafe opened on February 28th of this year.

The recommended item from the "morning" menu, available from 10 AM to evening, is the pancake plate (1360 yen), featuring Kasahara's favorite pancakes. Made to order with batter mixed just for you and cooked slowly, they boast an astonishing fluffiness. If you're lucky, you might also enjoy apple juice made with apples from Morioka, sent by Kasahara's wife, Yoko, from her family's home.

Originally, the cafe closed in the evening, but due to requests from local foreign residents who wanted to enjoy wine, evening hours began on Thursdays and Fridays. The "dinner" menu offers curry and beer. On Saturdays, the "weekend" menu features dishes like eggs Benedict and sirloin steak sandwiches on homemade focaccia.

"Our bread is handmade, and our natural yeast waffles and bagels are also popular. This season, we're also serving pumpkin soup. We also offer bento boxes and catering services," says Yoko, the shop director and interior planner. Regulars might even get to enjoy the staff meal!

A Cafe Where You Can Relax with Your Dog

As Yoko says, "Eiji always imagines the feelings of cute girls when he works," toile de liberté offers the joy of browsing the merchandise in the shop. The aprons in the first-floor cafe are also handmade by Kasahara.

Furthermore, the second floor houses a shop selling miscellaneous goods and antique items, with a curated selection sourced from Morocco, Belgium, France, the United States, and elsewhere.

Although the selection may seem eclectic at first glance, each item is full of charm and perfect for oneself or as a stylish gift. New items are added irregularly, so it's worth checking out along with the cafe, where you'll want to linger.
