In Kesennuma, a Special Lunch Based on Chef Mikuni's Recipe

"A Week of Taste," which aims to pass on a rich food culture to children, began in earnest in Japan last year. This year, in addition to a competition themed around "bento boxes" – a significant part of Japanese food culture – famous chefs and cooks will volunteer as instructors, teaching approximately 4,500 students in 67 schools nationwide, primarily third graders.

Chef Mikuni, one of the initiators of "A Week of Taste" and a proponent of the "Smiles for Children!" project since the earthquake, will visit Karakuwa Elementary School in Kesennuma City, Miyagi Prefecture, on October 22nd (Monday). Following exchanges between Chef Mikuni and Kesennuma residents, a special class will feature a performance of the picture-story show "Kesennuma, Treasure of the Sea," created as part of the "Smiles for Children!" project, to cheer up those involved in scallop farming and the children. Furthermore, a "Taste Class" will be conducted for all students, followed by a special lunch prepared according to Chef Mikuni's recipe.

At Doshisha Elementary School in Kyoto, Hisao Nakahigashi, proprietor of "Sojiki Nakahigashi," a restaurant described as "the hardest to reserve in Kyoto," and Masato Miyazawa, owner of the acclaimed Kappo "Jikimiyazawa," known for his refined sensibility and skill, will hold "Taste Classes." At two other elementary schools in Kyoto City, Hiroshi Sasaki, owner of Kappo "Gion Sasaki," and others will conduct classes, aiming to teach children, who are in the crucial stage of taste development, the importance of savoring flavors and the joy of eating.

This is a special time for learning, with renowned chefs and cooks serving as instructors. Children will undoubtedly engrave upon their hearts, through this unique experience, the importance of savoring with all five senses and the joy of a rich mealtime.
