A Space Embodying the Japanese Spirit, Designed by Tsuyoshi Tane

Toraya Paris Reopens After 18 Years

Toraya, the long-established wagashi confectioner, has refreshed its Paris store after 18 years. Welcoming Tsuyoshi Tane of DGT, an internationally active architect, for the store's design, it celebrated its renewed opening this summer.

An Interior Embodying the Spirit of Harmony and Compromise

Toraya was born in Kyoto during the Muromachi period. While inheriting the tradition of historic Japanese confections, it opened Toraya Paris in 1980 to convey the Japanese spirit. Its sweets, incorporating both the Japanese spirit and local sensibilities, have captured the hearts of Parisians.

This summer, Toraya Paris has been renewed for the first time in 18 years. The design concept for the newly opened Paris store emphasizes craftsmanship, a principle also found in wagashi making.

The design was handled by Tsuyoshi Tane of DGT, who also designed the Estonian National Museum, scheduled for completion next year, and won two design awards at the Milan Salone in 2014. The approximately 70-square-meter interior features ivory plasterwork showcasing the artisan's skill, creating a space with a bright, wood-based ambiance.

The plaster walls are intentionally crafted without any sharp corners, embodying the Japanese spirit of "harmony and compromise, without creating friction."

A Salon de Thé Featuring Tables Inspired by Yokan

Guests can enjoy tea time in the salon de thé, which seats 38. The tables are inspired by yokan, Toraya's signature confection. French oak is dyed to resemble Ogura yokan 'Yoru no Ume' (Night Plum), and coated with resin to create a jelly-like translucence.

Beyond the entrance, where the same noren curtain that has hung since Toraya's expansion into Paris in 1980 reads "We wish to introduce Japanese culture through wagashi," lies Toraya's vision of craftsmanship. Here, exquisite and delicious Japanese confections await, sure to impress even the aesthetically discerning Parisians.
