Flower Artist Makoto Azuma Reveals His "Hand" in "Flower Method"
Makoto Azuma, a flower artist whose innovative creations have garnered significant attention, has released his book "Flower Method" through Bijutsu Shuppan-sha, which comprehensively introduces his techniques.
Text by YANAKA Tomomi
Photography by Shunsuke Shiiki, who co-founded "Jardin des Fleurs" with Azuma
Makoto Azuma opened "Jardin des Fleurs," an haute couture flower shop, in 2001, quickly gaining popularity for his creative arrangements. He is a flower artist whose work is showcased in museums and galleries both domestically and internationally. In recent years, his activities have expanded to collaborations with luxury brands and exhibitions abroad, drawing attention across a wide spectrum.
"Flower Method," born as a technique book, reveals the "hand" of Azuma, who has a large following worldwide. It introduces various techniques. The basic section analyzes flowers from four aspects—form, color, texture, and scent—to maximize their appeal. It explains the principles of creation through detailed instructions for 12 arrangements.
The advanced section, through instructions for 17 works, lectures on creating arrangements for diverse styles and occasions. It also unveils the "leaf work" technique, using foliage, which is employed in Azuma's signature "botanical sculptures."
The photographs of his unique creations were taken by Shunsuke Shiiki, who established "Jardin des Fleurs" with Azuma. As a partner who has worked together for many years, Shiiki's photography perfectly accentuates the individuality of Azuma's work.
In the preface, Azuma states, "I believe that 'reconstructing a new 'nature'' and 'maximizing the appeal of living flowers' are more important than technique when engaging with this book." "Flower Method," which presents not only techniques but also Azuma's approach to flowers and nature, along with his arrangements, is sure to enrich the hearts of many, not just those involved in flower arranging.
