From Interviews with Masters to Early Solo Exhibition Reviews of Japanese Artists Like Takashi Murakami
Kunie Sugiura moved to New York in 1967 after graduating from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and has been observing the city's art scene for nearly half a century. Alongside her work and exhibitions as a photographer, she contributed New York reports to the magazine "Bijutsu Techo" from 1986 to 2008.
These reports, including exhibition reviews and artist interviews, number over 400 in total. This book features a curated selection of 135 of these pieces.
The collection includes appearances by masters such as Jasper Johns, Cindy Sherman, Walter De Maria, and Richard Serra. It also reprints reviews of relatively early solo exhibitions in New York by Japanese artists like On Kawara, Takashi Murakami, and Hiroshi Sugimoto, along with photographic works by Sugimoto himself.
As a New Yorker and an artist herself, Kunie Sugiura's reports, written with the authority of an eyewitness, convey the vibrant pulse of New York's ever-changing art scene to us today.
