Professor Masamichi Katayama's "Turn Your Passions into Your Profession"

Leaders of Our Time Discuss Life and Work

Mr. Katayama, who also leads his own firm, Wonderwall, has designed interiors for global flagship Uniqlo stores in Ginza, New York, and Paris, as well as the newly openedLEXUSthis year, a sanctuary for"INTERSECT BY LEXUS - TOKYO", among other boutiques and shops worldwide.

He also took on the role of professor at Musashino Art University's Department of Scenography Design in 2011. Now, a book has been released that completely captures "Professor Katayama's" special lecture series for students, titled "Instigator."

In "Instigator," a term meaning agitator or catalyst, five esteemed "seniors" who lead their respective industries and eras—Kashiwa Sato, Hidetoshi Nakata, NIGO®, Katsuhiro Otomo, and Kohei Nawa—made appearances. Discussions with Mr. Katayama unfolded.

This class generates such excitement that students form long queues, much like at a live concert, requiring numbered tickets each time. The "seniors" on stage shared a simple message: "Turn your passions into your profession."

What kind of childhood and student lives did they lead, and how did they decide on their career paths? What turning points did they encounter after starting their careers, and how did they overcome challenges? The book not only fully captures the lecture content but also records the energy and atmosphere of the approximately 500 students who gather each time.

What makes this lecture series even more "special" is the music played in the classroom before the guests take the stage. The music selection is curated by musician Shinichi Osawa, who chooses tracks from various genres to match each guest.

To coincide with the book's release, an official compilation CD, "Music for Instigator Compiled by Shinichi Osawa," is set to be released on December 18th (Wednesday). All tracks, including the original theme "instigator theme" that kicks off the lecture series, are compiled under Mr. Osawa's supervision.

This special lecture series began with Mr. Katayama's own question: "If I were a university student now, what kind of talks would make my future life more meaningful?" In an era where finding one's dreams can be challenging, the words of "seniors" who have pursued their passions as professions are sure to resonate deeply with us as adults.
