Mikiya Takimoto Photography Book 'LAND SPACE'

Photographer Mikiya Takimoto continues his remarkable career. He has published his new photo book, 'LAND SPACE,' with Seigensha, which illuminates the form of the Earth by resonating the space shuttle, a pinnacle of cutting-edge science and technology, with the primordial state of our planet.

A Curious Resemblance Between 'SPACE' and 'LAND'

Mikiya Takimoto, a photographer whose work spans numerous commercials and graphic advertisements, and who also served as the cinematographer for the film 'Like Father, Like Son,' opening this autumn, embarks on a new photographic journey in his latest book. He 'photographs' the Earth by oscillating between two series: 'SPACE,' which involved several trips to the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, USA, to capture the space shuttle, and 'LAND,' which focuses on the primordial landscapes of our planet.

In 'SPACE,' Takimoto fragments moments of the space shuttle, capturing assembly buildings and maintenance facilities within the space center—areas normally off-limits to photography, let alone entry—and the instant of launch. In contrast, 'LAND' confronts terrains that preserve the ancient visage of the Earth, such as moss-covered landscapes in Iceland, the hoodoos of Cappadocia in Turkey, and volcanoes in Indonesia and Hawaii.

The zenith of civilization, reached by humanity in mere decades, and the beauty of nature, sculpted over four and a half billion years. Though seemingly polar opposites, they exhibit a strange parallelism; for instance, a close-up of a space shuttle's engine nozzle evokes the crater of a dormant volcano.

The Earth before the emergence of life, and the Earth as a planet, revealed through advancements in science and technology, seen as never before. As you turn the pages, you will witness another history of Earth, brought forth by the synergy of these two perspectives.
