Rare Photographs and Lionni's Words Illuminate a Tumultuous Life

Chiyoko Matsuoka, deputy director of the Itabashi Art Museum, has previously curated exhibitions that explored the complete works of renowned picture book artists such as Lionni, Yasuo Segawa, and Tomi Ungerer. She is also known for her profound understanding of picture books, having served as a judge for prestigious international illustration competitions like the Bologna Children's Book Fair and the Biennial of Illustrations Bratislava. This time,in conjunction with the 'Leo Lionni: The Art of Picture Books' exhibition, 'Leo Lionni: The Man Who Created Hopeful Picture Books' has been published.

This book, by Matsuoka, who corresponded with Lionni annually for the three years leading up to his death in 1999, vividly portrays Lionni's life and work. Each chapter features resonant quotes from Lionni, which serve as clues to unraveling the secrets of his creative process. The book also includes previously unpublished photographs of Lionni's studio in Tuscany.

Furthermore, through precious words and photographs, the book delves into Lionni's turbulent life, including his forced exile from the Netherlands to America as a Jewish refugee.
