Chronological Exploration of Curated 'Ideas'

BOOK | 『100 IDEAS THAT CHANGED FASHION』02

『100 IDEAS THAT CHANGED FASHION』 focuses on the period from 1900 to 2010, exploring its influence on women's fashion.

Through photographs and text arranged chronologically, it clearly illustrates the shifts in fashion history, touching upon its connections to politics and economics.

Women continually updated their attire amidst rapid societal changes.
The transition from corsetry, evident in the early section on 'Liberation from the Corset,' is striking. By the 1920s, as women entered the workforce alongside men, simple skirt suits became essential. Notably, Yves Saint Laurent's 'Le Smoking' tuxedo for women is highlighted as a symbol of female independence.

The emergence of the 'teenager' in the 1950s created an entirely new market demographic. Distinct styles originating from youth subcultures, such as 'Mods' and 'Hippies' in the mid-20th century, are prime examples.

Fashion designers are introduced in relation to their groundbreaking creations. Innovators like Elsa Schiaparelli, with her 'padded shoulders,' consistently produced items that would later become synonymous with their names.

The 'ideas' that form the core of this book were selected through ongoing discussions during its creation. Ultimately, the topics chosen are those that fundamentally altered the course of fashion, to the extent that today's fashion would be different without them.

A Book to Deepen Your Appreciation of Fashion

Author Harriet Worsley writes in the book's introduction:

'If the last 110 years have been extraordinary, imagine what 2110 will bring. The final idea in this book hints at an astonishing future, but it is only the beginning. What will the next idea be? It is bound to be challenging, dramatic, and unimaginable.'

In just one century, from 1900, fashion has undergone a remarkable transformation. By engaging with this book and gaining an overview of the ideas that continue to influence today's fashion scene, readers can look forward to fashion with even greater interest.
