Diverse and Rich 'Small Celebrations' Found in Everyday Life
Born in Okayama Prefecture in 1971, Hiroshi Ono began traveling the world and creating art while studying sculpture at Tama Art University. He received the Konica Photo Encouragement Prize in 1999 and an encouragement prize at the "VOCA" exhibition in 2003. Eleven years ago, he moved his base to Amsterdam.
In his debut work, "Line on the Earth" (2007), he traveled to various locations with his camera, depicting his own encounters with the harsh realities of the world—refugee issues, religious wars, civil conflicts, genocides, and disasters—with a keen sensibility, earning strong support from readers.
Four years later, his second book, "The World Is Full of Small Celebrations," chronicles his move to the Netherlands alone after feeling alienated from life in Japan, followed by his gentle days in Amsterdam, accompanied by warm photographs taken in both Japan and the Netherlands.
To commemorate the publication, talk events with sociologist Hiroyuki Kubota and photography critic Mariko Takeuchi are scheduled to be held in Osaka and Tokyo in December.
Ono, who says he wants to create a book that can be like a canned coffee that readers drink at their commuter station, captures "fragments of happiness" with his camera, paired with words that are somewhat humorous and gently embrace the reader. These remind us of the diverse and rich "small celebrations" that exist naturally in our daily lives.
