MAKERS: The New Industrial Revolution

NHK Publishing has released "MAKERS: The New Industrial Revolution," the latest work from Chris Anderson, former editor-in-chief of WIRED US. His book "Free," which advocated for the freemium economic model online, is still fresh in our minds. What exactly does he reveal in this new book?

Text by Morito Iwanaga (OPENERS)

The Maker Movement is Reshaping Manufacturing in the 21st Century!

"In the last decade, we've seen dramatic changes across various industries on the web. The next decade will see this happen in the real-world manufacturing sector," states author Chris Anderson.

Traditionally, manufacturing has been a style of mass production, consolidating technology and costs, and was not an industry open to newcomers. However, in the 21st century, individuals can now access the same manufacturing capabilities as large corporations online. Funding can be raised through crowdfunding, and products can be sold globally by launching a website. This book makes us truly feel that we have entered an era where one can start a manufacturing business with just an idea and a computer.

Introducing Practical Examples of the "Desktop Factory's Four Sacred Tools"

3D printers, CNC machines, laser cutters, and 3D scanners. These are referred to as the "Desktop Factory's Four Sacred Tools," presented as instruments that dramatically expand the possibilities of DIY. "Makers" share their realized ideas with each other online, continuously creating things that don't exist in the existing market. Just as Steve Jobs changed the world through personal computers, "digital manufacturing methods" are changing the world. And therein lies the future of developed nations..

This book depicts "the next decade" as seen through the "Maker Movement." With each turn of the page, it feels as though the footsteps of a new era are drawing nearer.
