Daisuke Tsuda's "How to Move Politics Online!"
Daisuke Tsuda, a journalist and "media activist," has released his new book, "How to Move Politics Online!" published by Asahi Shinsho.
Text by YANAKA Tomomi
An Era Where We Can Change Society Using Social Media
Tsuda operates across the boundaries of mass media and social media. He serves as an expert committee member on several subcommittees of the Copyright Division of the Agency for Cultural Affairs, and with over 230,000 followers on Twitter, he is a rising journalist whose statements garner significant attention.
The new book, "How to Move Politics Online!," is divided into nine chapters, including "Social Media + Mass Media = ?", "Thinking About Online Public Opinion," and "You Can Move Politics." Tsuda argues that mass media, focused solely on political reporting, has rendered us "politically apathetic." He asserts that by utilizing familiar platforms like Facebook and Twitter, we are entering an era where we ourselves can change society.
As an example, he discusses the significant role social media played in the "anti-nuclear power demonstrations" held every Friday in front of the Prime Minister's Official Residence, which saw rapidly increasing participation. He argues that new media mobilized people who had never participated in demonstrations before, creating a significant movement, and introduces various examples of the potential of the internet and "next-generation democracy."
This is a must-read, especially with a major election that will shape the nation's future on the horizon. It offers a new approach to politics from a digital luminary for those who feel a sense of stagnation, thinking, "I can't trust politics anymore" or "Nothing will change anyway."
