Limited Edition Zine: 'Temporary housing + shelter'

In 2011, both New Zealand and Japan were struck by major earthquakes. split/fountain in New Zealand and Whatever Press in Japan, who each run their own publishing projects, collaborated as an editorial team to create a single volume featuring works by over 20 artists, architects, designers, and writers from around the world on the theme of “Temporary housing + shelter.” Contributors hail from the UK, Netherlands, Germany, South Korea, New Zealand, Japan, the US, and Canada.

Text by KIDO Masashi + USUDA Momoko (Whatever Press)

Exhibited and sold at Tokyo Art Book Fair 2012

While “Temporary housing” in Japanese refers to temporary dwellings and “shelter” evokes evacuation centers, this project expands beyond the architectural realm or disaster situations. It broadly spans the fields of architecture, design, and art, posing questions about the very nature of “Temporary” and what it means “To house” and “To shelter.”

Under the theme of temporality, this zine itself is conceived as a temporary dwelling, fundamentally rethinking the form and creation of books from the ground up. The printing process was also approached experimentally; in contrast to the high-resolution specifications of contemporary home electronics, the project deliberately adopted the low-resolution format of risograph printing. The theme of temporality extends beyond the zine itself, with an attempt to "OCCUPY" an outdoor space at TABF 2012 for its sale and exhibition.

The design is by Leyla TC, a rising designer from Werkplaats Typografie, a school considered a crucible of contemporary Dutch design. Japanese typesetting was handled by Minoru Kimura, also an alumnus of the same school. English translation was provided by Toshi Miyagi, a contemporary artist affiliated with Ai Kowada Gallery.

As of October, the first edition is nearly sold out, with a second printing scheduled for November. Please look forward to the updated second edition. The limited first edition can be purchased from the BOEK DECK online store (https://boekdeck.stores.jp/#!/).
