Yukihiro Takahashi's Guide to Pop Masterpieces: 'Music That Speaks to the Heart, Music That Heals the Heart'
PHP Shinsho has published 'Music That Speaks to the Heart, Music That Heals the Heart,' a 'personal guide to masterpieces' by musician Yukihiro Takahashi.
Text by YANAKA Tomomi
Behind the Scenes of Hits Like 'Raijin'
Takahashi Yukihiro, who began his career as a studio musician in high school, joined Kazuhiko Kato's Sadistic Mika Band as a drummer in 1972. In 1978, he formed Yellow Magic Orchestra (YMO) with Haruomi Hosono and Ryuichi Sakamoto. The group left an indelible mark not only on music but also on various art scenes worldwide before their 'disbandment' in 1983.
He has also enjoyed a successful solo career, releasing 22 original albums from 'Saravah!' in 1978 to 'Page By Page' in 2009. He has also been active in units such as THE BEATNIKS, SKETCH SHOW, and pupa, and has had a long career as a fashion designer.
His new book, 'Music That Speaks to the Heart, Music That Heals the Heart,' recounts the music that captivated him and the stories behind the creation of his own songs. Divided into six chapters, it explores his musical experiences from childhood, including his inspirations like The Beatles, who profoundly influenced his music and fashion, and The Ventures, whom he admired as a drumming role model. Takahashi also shares personal anecdotes about his encounters with Haruomi Hosono, Ryuichi Sakamoto, and Kazuhiko Kato, and the making of masterpieces like 'Raijin,' all told from his unique perspective.

Furthermore, the book delves into the lyricism found in Japanese lyrics, drawing parallels with Chuya Nakahara's poetry and children's songs like 'Akatombo,' and explores the joy of creating new music through the chemical reactions with various musicians, offering a glimpse into his musical philosophy.
'Music That Speaks to the Heart, Music That Heals the Heart' is a masterpiece guide that invites us into the universe of pop music, told by a musician who captivated the world.
