Text by YANAKA Tomomi
Produced by Yukihiro Takahashi, with Whom He Had a Close Relationship at the Time, Including Special Contributions
Steve Jansen was born in London in 1959. He began his musical career in his teens with his older brother, David Sylvian, who is still active as a musician. He then formed the band JAPAN with his classmate Mick Karn on bass and Richard Barbieri on keyboards. JAPAN, with their unique sound, received high acclaim in Europe and Japan, and disbanded at their peak in 1982. Even after more than 30 years, they still have passionate fans worldwide.
Jansen's first photo collection, 'Through A Quiet Window,' is now published, and he continues to be active as a musician and producer. The book includes approximately 170 rare photographs taken around 1981-1983, during the later period of the band's activities, capturing candid moments of the members during recording sessions and tours.
Furthermore, the collection features many previously unreleased works, including photographs of YMO (Yellow Magic Orchestra) members Yukihiro Takahashi, Ryuichi Sakamoto, and Haruomi Hosono, with whom Jansen had a close relationship through mutual participation in recordings and tours, as well as Masami Tsuchiya, the final member of JAPAN. Notably, Yukihiro Takahashi produced this Japan-exclusive edition and contributed a special piece titled 'A Quiet Gaze.' All text, including some photo captions, is presented in both Japanese and English.
Ahead of the general release on Friday, October 23rd, pre-orders will begin on Monday, September 28th, at four online shops: Amazon, Tower Records, Disk Union, and Lawson HMV. This allows fans to obtain the book slightly earlier.
Upon opening the pages of 'Through A Quiet Window,' one is greeted by a series of photographs that seem to capture the very atmosphere of the time, remarkably fresh despite being over 30 years old. It stands as a precious record of an era, captured by someone who was close to the now-legendary JAPAN and YMO.
