The Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and Nippon Television Network Corporation will present "The Boston Museum of Fine Arts Exhibition: Art x Power" at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum from July 23 (Saturday) to October 2 (Sunday), 2022. The exhibition will feature works selected around the theme of "Art and Power" from the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, founded in 1876 by a group of Boston citizens. Throughout history, rulers have harnessed the power of art to assert their authority. The majestic portraits and exquisite crafts, along with the precious collections they amassed, form the foundation of today's museums.
This exhibition explores the history of art intertwined with power through approximately 60 works from regions including Egypt, Europe, India, China, and Japan. Notably, "Scroll Painting of Minister Kibi's Visit to Tang China" and "The Tale of the Heiji Scrolls: The Attack on the Sanjō Palace," both considered national treasures if exhibited in Japan, will be reunited for this exhibition. Additionally, Masuyama Sessai's representative work "Peacock," created by a former lord of the Ise-Nagashima domain during the Edo period, has been restored for this exhibition and will be publicly displayed in Japan for the first time.
Regarding the new exhibition dates, actor Jun Kaname, who serves as the official supporter for the exhibition, commented: "The Boston Museum of Fine Arts Exhibition returns after the global pandemic that began last year. This once-in-a-century pandemic continues to cause global disruption, highlighting intractable problems and casting a shadow. The voices longing for the pre-pandemic world are incessant, and I am one of them. This 'Boston Museum of Fine Arts Exhibition: Art x Power' is the result of the dedication of Boston citizens over more than 150 years. I pray that these exquisite artworks, which have overcome various historical challenges, will impart strength and wisdom to us living today."
