ART | Experience 99 Kutani Ware pieces from 71 participating artists at Japan's largest Kutani Ware event.

KUTANism, an art festival celebrating the allure of traditional Kutani Ware through its techniques and origins, is held both in person and online.

The art festival "KUTANism," dedicated to conveying the charm of traditional "Kutani Ware" to the world, will be held from Saturday, September 18 to Sunday, November 14, 2021. It features five content areas, including "EXHIBITION," showcasing 99 works, a serialized project covering the production region, and talk sessions, all available both in person and online.

A stunning collection of Kutani Ware, highlighting diverse techniques with vibrant colors, bold compositions, and intricate painting.

"KUTANism" is an art festival aimed at promoting the world-renowned traditional craft of "Kutani Ware," originating from Komatsu City and Nomi City in Ishikawa Prefecture. For its third iteration in 2021, themed "Techniques that Foster Individuality," five content areas—"EXHIBITION," "LIBRARY," "GUIDED TOUR," "MOVIE," and "SHOP"—will be presented both in person and online.
The "EXHIBITION" features two shows curated by Mieko Iwai, Chief Researcher at the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, and Shinichi Nakaya, Director of the Kutani Kosen Kiln Museum in Nomi City: "Magnificent Splendor - The Present of Kutani Ware" and "Master Craftsmen Selection: NEXT Kutani Vol. III." On-site events such as talk sessions and painting workshops offer deeper insights into Kutani Ware, while online, visitors can view 99 meticulously crafted pieces from 71 participating artists.

The "LIBRARY" presents a serialized project where Yuji Akimoto, Director of Nerima Art Museum and General Supervisor of KUTANism, revisits the origins of Kutani Ware, rediscovering its long history and stories through visits to production sites. The "GUIDED TOUR" offers an original tour exploring the Kutani Ware production areas.
The "MOVIE" section is a video archive showcasing the charm of the production region, including newly produced footage created specifically for this project. The "SHOP" provides a collection of photos and links to stores handling Kutani Ware from Komatsu City and Nomi City. This is the largest-scale Kutani Ware event in Japan, featuring a full lineup of unique Kutani Ware pieces that shine with their distinctive techniques, such as vibrant colors, intricate painting, and bold compositions.
