ART | An Art Event Featuring 43 Emerging Artists
An Alternative Art Event Completed Through Communication Between Artists and Viewers
ARTISTS’ FAIR KYOTO 2021, a new art event that blurs the lines between art exhibition and art fair, will be held on Saturday, March 6 and Sunday, March 7, 2021. Works by 43 emerging young artists, selected through recommendations from artists active both domestically and internationally, as well as open applications, will be exhibited and sold in unique venues across Kyoto. Additionally, from late January to late March 2021, eight satellite events, "ARTISTS' FAIR KYOTO: SATELLITE 2021," will take place throughout the city of Kyoto.

ARTISTS' FAIR KYOTO 2021, an art fair set against the historic backdrop of Kyoto, will be held on Saturday, March 6 and Sunday, March 7, 2021. Now in its fourth year, this fair transcends the conventional framework of art fairs and has gained popularity as a venue that fosters communication between visitors and artists, increasingly becoming a gateway for emerging artists.
For 2021, under the theme "Singularity of Art," Noboru Tsubaki serves as director, and 17 leading artists in the current art scene, including Kohei Nawa, Chiharu Shiota, and Izumi Kato, form the advisory board for recommending young artists.
A total of 43 promising emerging artists have been selected through recommendations from the 17 advisory board members, each offering a unique perspective, and through an open call. The main venues will be the Kyoto Museum of Art, Annex, and the B1 floor of the Kyoto Shimbun Building, with dot architects handling the spatial design. These distinct venues will be transformed into unique exhibition spaces, showcasing and selling a diverse range of works, from paintings to installations utilizing cutting-edge technology.
Furthermore, this year marks the introduction of the "ARTISTS' FAIR KYOTO 2021 Akatsuki ART AWARD" to support the activities of young artists. Shihoko Iida, Yasuyuki Nakai, and Junya Yamamine have been invited as judges to select the winning work from among the artists exhibiting at "ARTISTS' FAIR KYOTO 2021," alongside director
Noboru Tsubaki. The grand prize winner will receive a solo exhibition at the art complex "ANB Tokyo."
Although the event was regrettably canceled in 2020 due to the impact of COVID-19, ARTISTS' FAIR KYOTO 2021 will be held with measures in place to ensure a safe and secure experience for visitors, requiring advance reservations with designated time slots.
Additionally, as a satellite event for this fair, "ARTISTS' FAIR KYOTO: SATELLITE 2021" will be held from late January to late March 2021. This event aims to invigorate the art scene together with companies that resonate with the concept of "ARTISTS' FAIR KYOTO." Collaborating with artists who have previously exhibited at "ARTISTS' FAIR KYOTO," installations and performances will be presented throughout the city of Kyoto.
The venues include eight locations: Senmaruya Kyoto Yuba Main Store, Fujii Daimaru Black Storage, Fujii Daimaru 1F & 2F THE SPACE FUJII DAIMARU, Artist-in-Residence Kamo Nasu, ygion 4F Lounge, Shin-Pukan Courtyard, Bijuu B1F Gallery Space, and the Machiya Stay "Sanbo Nishitouin-cho Machiya." Works by current artists such as Kengo Kito, Mika Shinagawa, and Yotta are scheduled to be exhibited and sold.
Dates and times vary by venue, and opening hours may change during a state of emergency declaration. For details, please check the official website of ARTISTS' FAIR KYOTO: SATELLITE 2021 (https://artists-fair.kyoto/events/).
Director Noboru Tsubaki shared a message regarding the event: "While it may be too early to fully evaluate 'ARTISTS' FAIR KYOTO,' I would like to acknowledge two facts surrounding the turbulent year of 2020: 'DIRECT' and 'TRUST' – words that will likely shape the future world. Directness and trust. Of course, despite the merits and demerits of rating systems, creators and society are now directly connected to those who seek their work and to society itself. Although this is a minuscule movement compared to the vast global art market, we hope to gain the empathy of those who will lead the future, as a locally-sourced startup."
In this era of great change, we invite you to experience the cutting edge of the art scene in the city of Kyoto.
