The National Portrait Gallery, founded in 1856, is a museum that collects portraits of individuals who have contributed to British history and culture. From its collection, the "KING & QUEEN Exhibition: The Story of the British Monarchy Through Masterpieces" from the National Portrait Gallery, London, will be held at The Ueno Royal Museum in Tokyo, tracing the history of the British monarchy through portraits from five dynasties, from the Tudors to the current Windsors, and delving into the stories of the figures depicted.
The exhibition will also present the history experienced by the royal figures who served as models for the portraits. These works reveal both tradition and innovation, demonstrating how changes in the monarchy brought about changes in portraiture, and, above all, how monarchs used portraits to project their image to the public.

The exhibition is supervised in Japan by Hiroshi Kumazawa, an associate professor at the University Art Museum, Tokyo University of the Arts, specializing in Western art history and museology. The exhibition navigator is Kyoko Nakano, author of "The Art of the Evil" (Kowai E), who proposed the enjoyment of appreciating "reading paintings" by understanding their historical context.
From Henry VIII, known through Shakespeare's plays, to Elizabeth I, arguably the most famous queen in history, and the current Queen Elizabeth II. This is a rare opportunity to view the stories of the British monarchy, which have been depicted in countless films and stage productions, alongside their historical context.
