Yumi Sugimoto: Collaborating from the Planning Stage as a Means of Self-Expression
Tadao Matsuda has photographed many women, focusing on fashion and gravure work. He has shot numerous actresses and models, publishing over 50 photobooks. His work spans magazines and web content, transcending media boundaries to present a wide range of creations.
For the third "mono-chrome" series at tokyoarts gallery, Matsuda chose Yumi Sugimoto as his muse. A model and actress with over a decade of experience, Sugimoto was born in the Heisei era. She participated in this collaboration from the planning stages, seeking a platform for self-expression that could not be conveyed through magazines or television.
Within the narratives spun through Matsuda's lens, Sugimoto fluidly embodies various personas. Her beauty is maximized and brought to fruition as art through Matsuda's lens, who has been photographing her since she was 17.
Yumi Sugimoto exists within the fantastical monochrome world created by Matsuda. It is worth visiting to seek out "her form," which can only be encountered here.
