Featuring Shots from Celebrity Portraits and David Bowie Series
Brian Duffy transformed fashion photography, which had predominantly been studio-based portraits, by adopting a documentary approach. He was a pioneer of street fashion photography as we know it today, and alongside David Bailey and Terence Donovan, he is considered a great image-maker of "Swinging London," the street culture that flourished in 1960s London.
In addition to fashion photography, he also photographed celebrities such as John Lennon, Paul McCartney, and Brigitte Bardot. He is also known for the jacket photograph of David Bowie's 1974 album "Aladdin Sane."
Duffy ceased his photographic activities in 1979, reportedly burning many negatives in his studio's backyard. However, in 2006, his son Chris began meticulously examining Duffy's archives. Fortunately, it was discovered that not all negatives had been lost. A photo book featuring the rediscovered negatives was published in 2011, and exhibitions have been held worldwide.
This exhibition, the first in Japan, features approximately 35 estate prints provided by the Duffy Archive, managed by his son Chris, who carries on Brian Duffy's legacy. The collection, including his best works from fashion, portraiture, and the David Bowie series, captures the mood and atmosphere of the 1960s and 70s, indelibly imprinting the presence of the great photographer Brian Duffy upon our minds.
