The First Opportunity in Japan to See Djordjaze's Work

Djordjaze was born in Tbilisi, Georgia, in 1971. After studying at the Art Academy of Tbilisi and the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf in Germany, she has recently held solo exhibitions at numerous museums based in Germany, and has also participated in international exhibitions such as the Berlin Biennale and the Venice Biennale. This is her first solo exhibition in Japan, to be held at Rat Hole Gallery.

Her works are characterized by amorphous structures that oscillate between functionality, decoration, and abstraction, utilizing a wide range of materials from plaster, cardboard, glass, wood, metal, and concrete to linoleum and foam rubber. Furthermore, these structures, which also appear as fragments of furniture such as chairs, desks, beds, and shelves, create a uniquely emphasized world when combined with found objects like carpets, photographs, and lamps.
Her works do not symbolize anything in particular, nor are they intended as references to historical archetypes in art or design. What can be said is that the influences of constructivist architecture, film, and literature that developed in Tbilisi in the 1920s and 30s, and which she found deeply engaging, are certainly reflected in her body of work.

For this solo exhibition, Djordjaze will create works on-site at the gallery and present an installation of drawings and three-dimensional works. We highly recommend experiencing her sculptural installations, developed from an intuitive process of playing with forms and objects in space.
