Art projects set in Hamamatsu, including the "Zipper Boat" on Lake Hamana
Suzuki is gaining international attention for his ambitious works that re-examine everyday materials and phenomena from a unique perspective, such as the "Zipper Boat," which garnered attention at last year's Setouchi Triennale, and "Apple Kendama," made from Japanese thinned wood. This exhibition, his largest to date, is being held as a special exhibition commemorating the 100th anniversary of Hamamatsu City's incorporation and the 40th anniversary of the Hamamatsu Museum of Art's opening.
The keywords for this exhibition are "Earth," "Blink," "Apple," and "Me," as featured in the exhibition title. An exploration of "BORDER" will unfold from these four elements. The exhibition is structured to allow visitors to encounter "borders" between various phenomena and events throughout the museum, featuring representative works such as "Perspective of Playground Equipment," where daytime scenes emerge from the night darkness, and "Apple's Reversal," where an apple falls across the first and second floors, along with approximately 10 new pieces.
In parallel with the exhibition, the "Yasuhiko Suzuki Art Project in Hamamatsu 2011" will be held at several locations in Hamamatsu City and on Lake Hamana. This includes the operation of the "Zipper Boat," inspired by the sight of a boat's wake resembling a zipper, on Lake Hamana, as well as related events that allow people of all ages to enjoy art up close, such as "Flipbook Manga Shopping Street," where flipbook animations related to each shop are displayed inside stores in the shopping district.
On Sunday, November 6th, a special talk will be held between Suzuki and neuroscientist Dr. Kenichiro Mogi. Additionally, on Sunday, November 13th, a workshop titled "Awakening with Art, Building Communication," led by Professor Kenryu Nakamura of the University of Tokyo's Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology, where Suzuki's lab is based, will offer a different perspective on appreciating the exhibition using digital tools.
This exhibition, which freely manipulates the distance between the small phenomenon of a "blink" and the grand existence of the "Earth" to explore "borders," invites us to experience Suzuki's work, which asserts its presence by crossing the "borders" between the artwork and the viewer.
