An "Artistic Autumn" to Savor with Exquisite French Cuisine
The "Food and Art Salon" is an art salon for adults, organized by the project "+ ART CLUB," initiated by Chef Keisuke Matsushima. The venue is Restaurant-I, a Michelin-starred restaurant run by Chef Matsushima. Each session invites an artist, primarily emerging talents, for a discussion with Chef Matsushima. It's an opportunity to directly engage with the artist's unique sensibility while enjoying fine food, wine, and conversation with fellow attendees.
For this 13th installment, Richard Woleck from Nice, France, has been invited to present works themed around "Reconstruction." Woleck first gained recognition as the singer for the rock band "Plein Sud" before becoming a T-shirt designer. Captivated by creative expression, he embarked on his journey as an artist. He creates his art by using CG to reconstruct photographs and old paintings into virtual contemporary images, which are then printed on aluminum panels. His work conveys social messages with a touch of humor and is represented by "la Galerie Ferrero," Nice's largest gallery.
Chef Matsushima: "The Last Samurai"?
In a piece that reimagines Leonardo da Vinci's masterpiece "The Last Supper" within a modernized, Americanized world, Christ is depicted wearing a Che Guevara T-shirt, and among the twelve apostles, some are seen in T-shirts of the Sex Pistols and Bob Marley.
The meaning behind this is likely to become clear when one considers the symbolism of punk rock and reggae in relation to the twelve apostles. Other works, including one that portrays Chef Matsushima as "The Last Samurai," offer messages that unfold the more you look, ensuring the viewer remains captivated.
A Connection Forged in Nice
Nice is a significant location for Chef Matsushima, as it was where he opened his first restaurant, "Kei's Passion" (now KEISUKE MATSUSHIMA), in 2002. The restaurant has maintained its Michelin star for six consecutive years since earning it in 2006, making him the youngest foreigner to achieve this distinction. Notably, "la Galerie Ferrero" and "KEISUKE MATSUSHIMA" have a vibrant collaborative history; Jean-Antoine Hierro, an artist from the gallery, designed the menu cover for "KEISUKE MATSUSHIMA." Incidentally, Hierro alsoThe 6th "Food and Art Salon"appeared as a guest artist.
What insights will emerge from the conversation between Chef Matsushima, described as "The Last Samurai of Gastronomy," and the humorously rebellious artist Woleck, as they explore the theme of "Reconstruction"? This autumn, indulge in a fusion of art and cuisine that will stimulate your senses.
