Is it a Restaurant, a Play, or a Performance?

"Delivering the concept to your stomach"—Artist Ayako Suwa began her activities under this unique tagline, known as "food creation." She engages in various initiatives related to "food," including exhibitions, performances, catering, and product development.

Her activities gained particular attention with her first exhibition in 2008 at the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa's Design Gallery, titled "Design of Appetite: Tasting the Tastes of Emotion." The unprecedented attempt, where visitors could actually taste edible works representing human emotions like joy, anger, sorrow, and pleasure, received a significant response.

In recent years, she has also expanded her artistic expression under her own name. She presents "Guerrilla Restaurant," a food performance where one can taste "tastes of emotion" in a specially designed environment, both domestically and internationally. Her works, which fuse elements of restaurants, theater, and performance, breaking free from conventional boundaries, have been highly acclaimed worldwide.

Humans have evolved because of desire,
evolving unable to suppress their appetite, driven by curiosity for unknown tastes,
and food that satisfies all senses.
Color, luster, shape, texture, aroma, taste, temperature, humidity, bite, mouthfeel, smoothness,
the sensation and stimulation as it melts into the body, memories sleeping deep in the brain,
all become flavors that stir emotions, liberating instincts.
Not a source of nutrition or energy, not gourmet or fine dining,
a provocative dinner that reminds you of your lost desires.
Welcome to Restaurant LOST TONGUES.

Ayako Suwa

In Ayako Suwa's largest-ever exhibition, a guerrilla restaurant called "LOST TONGUES" will appear within the venue, offering a food performance where guests can experience the "tastes of emotion" daily. The venue will be transformed into a genuine restaurant, where guests will enjoy a full course of art.

"A taste of happiness, followed by a bittersweet taste"

Around the perimeter of the floor, there will be an exhibition of three-dimensional works, photographs, and graphics with food as a motif, created by Suwa, as well as videos documenting her past "food creation" activities. This will provide entertainment during any waiting times.

Her defining characteristic is "food as expression," conveyed through the five senses. It's not just about taste; it's about savoring with your eyes, nose, imagination, and the texture and sound in your mouth. This is not about satisfying hunger or indulging in fine dining, but about experiencing a new value of "food."
