Yusuke Komuta is known for his style of deconstructing the figurative appearance of origami and directly translating it onto canvas as abstract compositions. After completing his Master of Fine Arts at Tokyo University of the Arts Graduate School in 2009, he reverses the construction process from three dimensions to a single sheet of paper, creating abstract works where color and planes unfold like a kaleidoscope.
Komuta's acrylic paintings are characterized by their hard-edged color fields. Patterns creating symmetry along fold lines vie for attention, constructing a movement of light that possesses no weight.
Layers of color are applied with spray over meticulous undercoats, with dotted lines created by airbrushing and underlying colors revealed by sanding the surface of the painting. This contrast creates a diverse range of expressions that captivate the viewer.
The exhibition will showcase these experiential flat works woven from color and pattern. Additionally, a series of ten works will present a world of lines and colors, including pieces that reflect the calculated angles and rhythmic shapes of the diamond-cutting technique known as 'brilliant cut,' a method Komuta has long been fascinated by, onto stainless steel mirror surfaces.
This exhibition, titled 'Unfolds,' carries the meaning of 'spreading out what has been folded.' The ephemeral nature of colors spreading without substance, and how even forms like cranes or paper airplanes disappear when unfolded, reducing to mere afterimages of geometric patterns. Komuta's large canvases, poised at the boundary between existence and non-existence, envelop the viewer in an experiential encounter woven from color and pattern.
