A new urban landscape woven from the simple lines of buildings and ethereal light

Photographer Michael Hitoshi, known for his series "Twilight," which captures cityscapes from above during dusk, will have a "homecoming" exhibition at Tokyo Arts Gallery to commemorate his Grand Prize win in the Special category at last year's International Photography Awards in the United States.

Hitoshi was born in Kagawa Prefecture in 1967. After studying art at university, he moved to Los Angeles in 1992 to pursue photography, working on numerous fashion magazines and advertisements. He returned to Tokyo in 1996, where he continues to work as an advertising photographer and an artist.

His representative work, the "Twilight" series, launched in 2008, redefines urban structure by capturing the cubic forms of skyscrapers in Tokyo's rapidly evolving cityscape from directly above. This concept is central to the series.

By photographing exclusively during the twilight hours, from dusk into night, he captures the beauty of moments when the interplay of light and shadow dissolves. These unprecedented photographs have garnered significant international acclaim, including the Grand Prize at the International Photography Awards in the United States.

Hitoshi battles fear, time, and technical challenges to capture the subtle light of dusk and the illumination emanating from buildings, creating unique urban landscapes. The exhibition showcases these ethereal Tokyo scenes, woven from the interplay of light and the fundamental lines of vertical, horizontal, and depth.
