A Collection of 1970s Tokyo Photographs by Diverse Photographers

Japanese post-war photography is currently gaining attention in the global art photography scene. In particular, the 1970s, a period of rapid economic growth that saw Japan undergo tremendous transformation, produced numerous photographers of unique vision. IMA, a photography magazine launched last August, has now curated an exhibition bringing together a powerful collection of photographs from that era, which continue to shine even after 40 years.

The exhibition's curator is Akio Nagasawa, who has extensive experience in publishing photobooks by the featured photographers and organizing exhibitions. The venue will display 300 photographs by nine distinguished artists: Daido Moriyama, Shuji Terayama, Taiji Arita, Yoshihiro Takagi, Issei Suda, Hajime Sawatari, Masatoshi Naito, Eikoh Hosoe, and Katsumi Watanabe. Notably, previously unreleased works from Daido Moriyama's "Farewell Photography" series will be introduced for the first time.

Remarkably, these works are available for purchase. Furthermore, the exhibition will host numerous workshops, including "Strolling with Issei Suda," an outdoor photography session and critique with Issei Suda, and a "Daido Moriyama Silk Screen Workshop." By applying through the website, visitors can not only appreciate the artworks but also engage directly with the photographers.

The 1970s, a decade profoundly shaped by turbulent political and cultural landscapes, dramatically influenced the spiritual climate of its people. These nine photographers captured Tokyo through their individual realities, revealing both the city we know and the one we don't.
