Talks with Photographer Risaku Suzuki and Others
Issei Suda was born in Kanda, Tokyo, in 1940. In his youth, he worked as the exclusive photographer for Shuji Terayama's experimental theater troupe, Tenjo Sajiki. From 1971, he began working as a freelance photographer, producing a body of work that, with its sophisticated perspective and exceptional technique, invites viewers into the hidden aspects of people, life, and cities. He received the Domon Ken Award in 1997, earning high acclaim both domestically and internationally.
This exhibition features representative works such as 'Fushi Kaden,' known for Suda's photographic style imbued with tension in every corner, and 'Tokyo Kei,' in which Suda, a true Edoite, captured 'moments' of Tokyo from the post-war chaos to the bubble economy era.
Also on display are 'Kurenai no Hana,' early unpublished works from boxes of negatives that Suda himself had sealed away at home, calling them 'unopenable,' and 'To Osorezan,' a collection from his travels to Osorezan in the 1960s. Furthermore, 'Nagi no Hiru,' a new series photographed in recent years around Suda's current residence in Chiba, will be shown for the first time. The artist's gaze, which seems to traverse between the everyday and the extraordinary, is presented in each photograph.
During the exhibition, talks between Issei Suda and guests will be held on October 5 (Saturday) and November 2 (Saturday). On October 5, the discussion will be with book designer Isshi Suzuki, and on November 2, with photographer Risaku Suzuki.
Issei Suda has captured vanishing landscapes and figures, and Japanese customs passed down from the Showa era to the present, with a unique perspective. This exhibition, which comprehensively covers his work, is a must-see.
