Taro Yamamoto Solo Exhibition "24/24 - twenty four twenty fourth -"

An exhibition of works by Taro Yamamoto, a painter who advocates for "Nippon-ga" infused with a contemporary perspective, titled "24/24 - twenty four twenty fourth -," will be held from Saturday, September 21st to Sunday, October 13th, at Imura Art Gallery Tokyo in Kanda. The exhibition will feature works that depict the humor and tenderness of Japan's multifaceted and chaotic modern society, themed around the Japanese traditional calendar, the twenty-four solar terms.

A Collaboration with Fellow Kumamoto Native Kaoru Kudo

Taro Yamamoto was born in Kumamoto Prefecture in 1974. After graduating from Kyoto University of Art and Design in 2000, he began working on "Nippon-ga," reinterpreting traditional Japanese paintings from a contemporary viewpoint. His unique artworks have been exhibited both domestically and internationally.

The twenty-four solar terms series, presented in this exhibition, was created at the request of Kaoru Kudo, a broadcast writer and fellow native of Kumamoto Prefecture, who is also the creator of the nationally beloved character "Kumamon." These works have already been selected for use as business card designs for the staff of Shimogamo Chaya, a long-established restaurant in Kyoto produced by Kudo.

The twenty-four solar terms divide the four seasons—spring, summer, autumn, and winter—into six periods each. This calendar has long been intimately connected with the lives of the Japanese people, and the events associated with each named period have been carefully passed down through generations. This new series, born from Taro Yamamoto's unique perspective on this traditional Japanese calendar, embodies the very spirit of "Nippon-ga."

Even while incorporating Western and contemporary cultural influences, the Japanese sensibility towards the changing seasons, which breathes within daily life, remains. We invite you to appreciate the harmonious interplay of the unchanging beauty of the seasons and the evolving landscape of Japan, depicted amidst this transience.
