Kaïdin's personal visits to various ateliers
Chanel has long protected its craftsmanship and savoir-faire, not only by inheriting the precious know-how of traditional couturiers who have supported French fashion but also by bringing ateliers under its wing to ensure continued growth. The Métiers d'Art collection, featuring designs by Karl Lagerfeld, has also been presented annually.
Now, a project has begun: sculptures by Kaïdin Monique Lebeau, depicting the hands of the artisans who, with exceptional skill, shape Chanel's beautiful creations.
Kaïdin Monique Lebeau, whose father is French and mother is Vietnamese, has lived and created in Africa since her teens. She has previously collaborated with Isamu Noguchi and presented installations inspired by the African landscape. In 2007, she traced the footsteps of Matsuo Basho, visiting northern Japan and creating the installation “in situ” – Latin for “in its original place” – inspired by haiku.
At Chanel Nexus Hall, visitors can see works created from molds taken by Kaïdin herself, who visited various ateliers. She observed the creation process of Métiers d'Art, haute couture, bags, jewelry, and perfume bottles, and captured the artisans' hands.
The works seem to emanate the very breath of the artisans at work. Visitors can feel Chanel's philosophy of creation, and immerse themselves in the world of artist Kaïdin, filled with respect and passion for her craft.
