Approximately 30 works by Michelangelo, primarily drawings, to be shown in Japan.
Michelangelo, a leading sculptor, painter, architect, and poet of the Renaissance, profoundly influenced Western art history with works such as the altar fresco 'The Last Judgment' and the sculpture 'David.' This exhibition offers a retrospective of his monumental achievements through 60 pieces, including works from the Casa Buonarroti museum, his former residence from 1516 to 1525, which remained the Buonarroti family's ancestral home until it was transferred to the city of Florence in the mid-19th century.
Casa Buonarroti boasts an extensive collection passed down through generations of Michelangelo's family, including drawings, sculptures, and letters. Notably, 'Madonna of the Stairs,' an early masterpiece in marble relief created by Michelangelo around the age of 15, has been kept private and will be loaned out for extended display for the first time.
The exhibition also commemorates the 500th anniversary of the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican, featuring preparatory studies for the ceiling frescoes depicting scenes from Genesis and 'The Last Judgment.' Furthermore, it highlights Michelangelo's role as an architect, including his work on St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican.
