Following 2009 and 2011, the Dojima River Biennale 2013 takes place this summer. With Rudy Tseng, a leading figure in contemporary art from Taiwan, serving as Artistic Director, the event aims to explore new horizons in art by connecting it with diverse fields.
In 2009, the exhibition was held under the title "Reflection: Today's World Through Art," with Fumio Nanjo, Director of the Mori Art Museum, as Art Director. In 2011, Takao Iida, Chief Curator at the Aomori Museum of Art, directed works that responded to the Great East Japan Earthquake, expressing the future of the Earth through art and architecture.
For this third iteration, Rudy Tseng, who is from Taiwan and also serves on the Asia Acquisition Committee for the Tate Galleries, which operate the UK's national museums, has been appointed Artistic Director. The theme, "Little Water," is inspired by the Dojima River, which has played a significant role in Osaka's landscape and the daily lives of its people.
Rudy Tseng has invited approximately 28 artists, primarily from Asia, including Japan's Hiroshi Sugimoto and Ryota Yagi, and Taiwan's Lee Mingwei. The venue will feature works such as "Imperceptible Waterfall" by the Tokyo-based collective teamLab, and pieces by India's leading contemporary artist N.S. Harsha, alongside various installations.
Rudy Tseng states, "The works in this exhibition express the complexity, diversity, and poetic beauty of water, the most fundamental element in nature, allowing us to re-recognize its unique value." Rivers have nurtured rich civilizations and cultures since ancient times. Now, a new wave of art is born on the banks of the Dojima River.
