"abandon/hope" presents photographs that David Sylvian, a consistently leading musician, has taken over many years. The exhibition will be held from July 22 (Mon) to 29 (Mon) at Spiral Garden in Minami-Aoyama.

Photo Installations and Limited Edition Photobooks from "Setouchi Triennale"



After debuting in 1978 as the vocalist for "Japan," David Sylvian has enjoyed a successful solo career since the 1980s, and has so farRyuichi Sakamotodemonstrated a diverse range of activities, including collaborations with artists like Ryuichi Sakamoto. Beyond his musical endeavors, Sylvian has also garnered attention for his work as an artist, creating visual art installations since the early 1990s.

Now, David Sylvian presents a photography exhibition titled "abandon/hope," showcasing images that have resonated with him across time and location. Approximately 70 works will be displayed, expressing a pure and resilient aesthetic that links with the sounds he creates.

The photobook "abandon/hope," sharing the exhibition's title, will also be released. It includes two original signed prints and a "playbutton," a badge-shaped media player that can play audio created for the "abandon/hope" project. Special Version I, limited to 50 copies worldwide, and Special Version II, limited to 250 copies with a "playbutton," will also be available. The standard edition, limited to 700 copies, brings the total to just 1,000 copies, making it a highly coveted photobook for fans.

Concurrently with this exhibition, his work will also be featured in the "Setouchi Triennale 2013," which begins its summer exhibition on July 20 (Sat) on the islands of the Seto Inland Sea and other locations. A photo installation utilizing a vacant house will be presented as a main project at Uno Port in Tamano City, Okayama Prefecture. Through these two exhibitions, visitors can experience the full scope of the "abandon/hope" project.

David Sylvian's photographic world evokes stories within the viewer's heart. He himself has this to say:

"For love to appear, hope must fall silent... I feel this might be a good beginning."
