From Antiquity to the 19th Century──Over 200 Treasures from the Louvre on Display
The Mediterranean, where ancient Egyptian and Aegean civilizations flourished, and later gave birth to the Greco-Roman civilizations that formed the bedrock of Western classics. It has been a stage for trade and conflict among diverse peoples, and a place where Eastern and Western cultures and religions dynamically intersected. The Louvre Museum, known as one of the world's three great museums, houses a vast collection of art from this region.
This exhibition brings together a diverse range of works from antiquity to the 19th century, all born from the Mediterranean. Over 200 carefully selected pieces, offering a sense of historical and spatial breadth from the museum's extensive collection, will be exhibited. A particular highlight is the "Diana of Gabii," a masterpiece of Roman sculpture, celebrated for its exquisite beauty, serene expression, and natural pose with a hand resting on its shoulder. Believed to have been created around 100 AD, this sculpture, identified as the goddess of the hunt, Artemis, has been part of the Louvre's collection since 1808. For the first time in 200 years, it is being exhibited outside the museum, making its debut in Japan.
