Gallery Talk with Shirane on Opening Day
Yutanpo Shirane is active across a wide range of media, including advertising, books, and magazines. Since her debut in the early 1990s, she has garnered widespread popularity for her pop art style, skillfully blending dry humor, eroticism, irony, and social commentary.
Her line drawings, reminiscent of cartoon comics, are establishing a unique genre, while she continues to present her work in solo and group exhibitions that align with the times. She has forged a fusion of subculture and art that illustration can mediate.
This solo exhibition, her first at Gallery Speak For in two years, will fully showcase a new series primarily based on drawings, a departure from her previous style of lines and coloring. The main focus will be on paintings of women with vacant, cute expressions and playfully erotic poses, featured in her "BLUE ZINE" series, which she has been releasing for several years.
The venue will display approximately 30 works, including original acrylic paintings and inkjet prints. Additionally, a new ZINE will be available for purchase at the venue, along with related items such as T-shirts and stickers. Furthermore, a gallery talk will be held from 6:30 PM on the opening day, featuring manga artist and illustrator Hisashi Eguchi as the interviewer, where Shirane herself will discuss her new works.
Her line drawings, characterized by their pop curves, have almost no background, employing simplified, symbolic depictions. This allows them to deeply engage the viewer's imagination, making them truly "loose," "cute," and "erotic" illustrations.
