The Artwork That Shocked the World, Once the Most Expensive Photograph Ever Sold

Born in former East Germany in 1955, Andreas Gursky moved to West Germany in his childhood and studied Visual Communication at the University of Art and Design Folkwang. From 1980 to 1987, he studied under Bernd Becher, a master of photography, at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. Known as one of the 'Becher School' artists, he is recognized as a world-renowned artist representing contemporary Germany.

In 2001, he held a major solo exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, which caused a stir. Furthermore, in November 2011, his work 'Rhein II' was sold at Christie's New York for approximately $4.33 million, then about 340 million yen, setting a record for the highest price ever paid for a photograph by a living artist, capturing public attention.

Approximately 65 Works from Early to Latest Pieces

This exhibition features approximately 65 works carefully selected by Gursky himself, ranging from his early pieces in the 1980s to masterpieces such as '99 Cent' (1999), 'F1 Pit Stop IV' (2007), 'Pyongyang' (2007), and works created in Japan like 'Tokyo Stock Exchange' (1990) and 'Superkameoka' (2007), as well as his latest work 'Qatar' (2012).

Furthermore, the exhibition's presentation method is particularly noteworthy. Instead of a chronological arrangement from early to recent works, the exhibition is structured according to his unique approach. The innovative display, juxtaposing early and new works, and photographs of various sizes, not only highlights each individual photograph but also makes the entire exhibition space feel like a single, cohesive artwork.

In recent years, Gursky's work has become increasingly conceptual, simultaneously producing pieces that resemble abstract paintings. This exhibition offers an opportunity to experience his unique visual world, where everything expands equally, fitting for our digitally advanced modern society.
